If you are interested in serving your community and love the satisfaction of helping your fellow man, Here is a some information to answer your questions. To become a member of the New Berlin Fire Company No. 1, Inc., you must be at least 16 years of age. We are at the firehouse every Tuesday evenings any time after 7 pm. So if you want some more info and maybe a few stories from some of us, so you can help make your decision stop on in and one of our members will get you a membership application or just show you around and talk with you about what exactly we do.  We hope to provide applications online, soon.

For Junior Membership (ages 16-17)

   The New Berlin Fire Company No. 1, Inc. is dedicated to helping younger individuals who have an interest in the fire service to accomplish their goal of becoming a firefighter.  Although a junior member may not do breathing apparatus, enter a hazard zone or climb ladders, he/she may be given other assignments around the emergency scene, such as changing breathing air cylinders.  The fire department officers and members will gladly assist those individuals with acquiring the skills they will need when they become 18 years of age.  You may also choose to ride along with the ambulance if that is more your style or both. The ambulance side is about the same as the fire. You will help grab things off the ambulance, get things for the EMT's as needed, and little things like that. But if that’s not enough for you, you can take your First Responder or EMT and then you will be able to work on patients and do all the exciting things you probably joined to do.

For Regular Active Membership (ages18-?)

   The New Berlin Fire Company No. 1, Inc. never has too many volunteers; we are always welcoming new members into the service.  What do you need to have when you join the department?  There is no training prerequisite to join the department; we will point you in the right direction and see that you have every opportunity to take all the required classes.  The only courses that the NBFD requires you obtain within the first 2 years of membership is Essentials Basic Module (EBM), Haz-Mat Awareness (aka Level 1... but prefer Operations, or Level II), and Introduction to Safety and Training (IST).  If you are interested in providing EMS, you must take the EMT or First Responder course offered through the Pennsylvania Department of Health. 

The only requirement with an application for regular active membership that differs from the junior membership application is that applicants over the age of 18 must first submit for a criminal history check through the Pennsylvania State Police (forms are provided).  The cost is $10.00.  Our annual dues fee is $10.00, but is waived for the first year, since you are incurring the same cost for the history check. 

   If that is not enough for you, the little added bonus is that if you are a member the company will pay for all of the fire and EMS training you take.
